Book Overview
Dune Messiah is the second Dune book written by Frank Herbert. Unlike the original book; Dune, Dune Messiah was not published in a single volume until lateron, as it was originally serialised in Galaxy Magazine in 1969, which explains why the novel is so much shorter than its predesscessor. Also unlike Dune, Dune Messiah did not win any awards for its ingenuity, though some fans have stated that they read Dune Messiah before they read Dune, and preffered it. In 2003, Dune Messiah (and it's successor, Children of Dune) was adapted into a television miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel, simply called "Children of Dune", starring James McAvoy, and was extremely well received among fans.The story takes place twelve years after the events in Dune, and tells the story of Paul Atreides' struggle as the Padishah Emperor and as the Mahdi of the Fremen. Paul's sister, Alia, is now an adult, and serves as both highpriestess and goddess incarnate on Arrakis, now the capital of the Empire. Irulan, Paul's token wife, who has been unwillingly forced to marry the man and yet is denied a child from him, begins to plot with several powerful people about how they may kill the Mahdi. The book follows in detail their plans, as well as chronicling Paul's troubles as both Ruler and Prophet.
