Used in the early days of Arrakis' Imperial discovery,Botanical Testing stations were established on the planet as a way of judging the nature of orhanic survival in harsh environments, presumably in the polar caps as well as in the deep deserts. After the discovery of Melange, the stations were rendered useless, as a new, more valuable commodity had made itself known.
