Perhaps if we saw what was ahead of us, and glimpsed the crimes, follies, and misfortunes that would befall us later on, we would all stay in our mother's wombs, and there would be nobody in the world but a great number of very fat, very irritated women.

Welcome, fellow Dunepedian, to Edgelover's User Page. I am Alex Stein, creator of Dunepedia, and its head administrator. I have created the Info boxes we use on Dunepedia, as well as the templates, including the "The Guild is Unhappy with this Article", the "This Article is featured on Dunepedia", and my personal favourite "This Page in Brief" banners. The this page in brief banner is my favourite because I had a lot of fun putting an article into a pair of briefs. I have been with Dunepedia since day one, and started the wiki due to my passion for all things Dune (yes, even the terrible film and television series).
I hope you enjoy Dunepedia, as I have invested much of my time into it (as you can tell from my edit count). Please, feel free to contribute or browse for information.

The History of Dunepedia

(and a bit about me too)

I was born in London, England, in the year of our Lord (Frank Herbert), 1992, making me fourteen years of age by the time I created Dunepedia, to a reasonably well off family. My mother, Charlotte, though she preferred the name "Carli", was a slightly radical human being, a product of the nineteen sixties, and my father, from sources I have gathered during his rare visits, was a musician/surfer, named Dewi Richards, who lives now in Wales, and is a reasonably negligent father to his other family.
Enough said.
At the age of ten, my mother and I moved to Southern Britain, into the area known as Brighton, though, in truth, it was in the suburban area called Saltdean. Here I acquired a dog, a lifelong wish of mine, and, naming him Chi (Tibetan term for life-force), continued my education in a very unusual schooling establishement, the Brighton Steiner School. I enjoyed my time at this school, with its unorthodox teaching methods, which, as far as I can gather, where designed to educate the children of the workers of the Waldorf Cigarette factory.
It was in the following years, that I began to use the Internet more often, not just as a way of watching television shows for free (which I did fervently), but to put out my ideas into the world. In between playing the video game, Black and White (one of my favorites), I endeavoured to create a website concerning the Dune Universe, a vast and expansive universe that, I believed, had not been done justice in the form of a Wiki. According to my sources, that an early website had been created, and was almost considering boycotting the site that was in progress, when I took a look at the old Dunepedia, and found that it had either been destroyed, or never made. I was abound with joy, and continued the website's construction, creating categories, a featured article system, and templates.
Finally the day came when Dunepedia was complete, and I set out into cyberspace to advertise it...

the story continues...

My Dunepedia Portfolio

These are the articles that I have improved, and thereby made featured.

Arrakis

Arrakis

One of the first articles I truly devoted my attention to. Arrakis, being the setting for most of Dune's events, seemed a very important thing to explain. I therefore added information on all the known aspects of the planet, including geography.

Guild Navigator

Guild Navigator

The second article I promoted to featured rank. Whilst containing little information, the Guild Navigator is a tough subject to describe. To explain it in detail, I added pictures, some from the Dune film and others from illustrations, and topped them off with text that fully explained the Navigators and their role in the Guild. I then added links to Guild Navigator articles.

Paul Atreides

Paul Atreides

My first truly major piece, describing Paul Atreides, main character of the first two books and influence for the others, was no simple task. Careful research was required to field the huge amount of information on the man. His biography, written in detail, was the hardest part of the job, and I followed it up with information on his personality and traits, and with a title box. Of course, with such a large article, a good half an hour refining and editing process was needed, before the article was ready, and became featured.

Dune

Dune (film)

My fourth featured article, Dune (film), concerned David Lynch's adaptation of the literary classic, Dune, which, frankly, was not all that fans had hoped for. To inform about the film, I added a list of plot differences between book and film, and information on how the effects of the film, such as the Baron's fat, were fabricated. Dune: Behind the Scenes was a very useful site when I sought more information and a few backstage images to accompany the text. I also added to trailers for the film, one containing no music, and the other with musical backdrop.

Explaining My Old Profile Images

Old Profile Image 1Old Profile Image 2Old Profile Image 3
First of my old profile images, the Great Sandworm, scraped because of size issues. The second of my old profile images, a Fremen on Dune, the same as the Dunepedia Logo, was scraped as the image was already in several places on the site.My third profile image was also used too often on the site, and though it was a brilliant Michael Stribling Image, I substitute it for a Guild Navigator.
